The reading material and the listening material have a debate on whether Spartacus is a appealing hero. The writer believes that Spartacus fascinates both historians and the general public, making him a particularly appealing hero, which is contradicted by the following lecturer.

Firstly, the writer claims that Spartacus ' s goal is to against Rome and return home. He and his men's desire is to take back the lands which is taken by Romans and their desire is what we can all appreciate. But the lecturer views this issue from an opposite angle. According to his opinion, returning home is not Spartacus's only goal. Spartacus wants revenge and march as far as possible to conquer lands. He doesn't want to miss the chance to take away many goods and then he clears the route wherever he goes.

Secondly, the author states that Spartacus's military brilliance and his thin background earns people's admiration. For Spartacus has a relatively small army but really defeat Romans on the battlefield. However, the speaker opposes the writer's opinion by saying that Spartacus doesn't have military brilliance because Romans doesn't take him seriously for his small army, so at first, Romans look down him and send weak army to battle Spartacus. Eventually, Spartacus wins several battles but was badly defeated in the end. His wins have much to do with the careless or Romans, not to his military brilliance.

Thirdly, the passage argues that Spartacus sought to liberate all Roman slaves and thus is respected by people for his human rights advocate. By contrast, in accordance with the speaker, the reading's claim doesn't hold water because the history lacks evidence. In 18th century, Europeans had some anti-slave movements and people got an inspiration from ancient stories about Spartacus and then created a play about his willing of liberating Roman slaves. Thus this story maybe not correct and the lecturer doubts that.

As far as I'm concerned, I tend to be in favour of the argument that companies ought to devote money to employee training. This choice would lead to some significant benefits.

To start with, just as Kelly has said, the ongoing training would improve the relationship between employees, which might create a harmonious working environment. A better working environment would lead to a higher working efficiency, and consequently, benefit the whole company.

In addition, the continuous employee training, undoubtedly, can improve the worker's capabilities. They can learn more knowledge and master more skills during the process. In that case, they are able to find out what they are good at or not, thus finding their proper positions in the company. As a result, they might be able to make more contributions to the company.

It is true that company need to save their resources for some unavoidable things. Like Andrew said, but with the skilled and talented workers brought up by the training, this would never be a problem.

We've been discussing the process of starting a new business and one of the most critical aspects of this process is staffing. That is, deciding which people to hire. Please discuss the following question: Is it better for new businesses to hire experienced veterans of the industry or to staff the business with younger employees who are right out of university? Why do you think so?

Claire

I think a company should staff a business with the most experienced employees possible. If you're starting a new business, you need people around you who know what they are doing and can quickly get the business up to speed. Spending time training inexperienced people will slow you down.

Paul

I understand what Claire is saying, but if you are starting a new business, you want people who are particularly enthusiastic and energetic. Who better than a recent graduate to bring those qualities to the job? You would be guaranteed an ambitious hard worker.

Answer:
It is undeniable that recent graduates can bring enthusiasm to the table, as Paul rightly points out. This energy can be contagious within a team and uplift the morale, which is especially crucial for a fledgling company navigating through obstacles. However, in my opinion, it is more advantageous for new businesses to recruit experienced industry veterans. These seasoned professionals have honed their practical expertise over years of experience and are better equipped to tackle the challenges that confront a startup. For instance, consider an electric vehicle startup in its nascent stage; it requires expertise to advance research on battery and charging technology, as well as autonomous driving systems. The intricate challenges in these areas are best addressed through the practical wisdom and expertise of seasoned industry veterans, rather than relying solely on fresh graduates.

As for as I am concerned, I tend to be in favour of the argument that companies ought to be hire the most experienced staff as much as possible. This choice would lead to some significant benefits.

To start with, just as Claire said, being around with experienced employees can quickly get the business up to speed. Experienced employees know what they are doing and they can give the suitable suggestions based on their working experience, which can greatly improve efficiency and help the company to make more benefits.

In addition, the experienced employees can help to train new comers who are new in this industry. They can teach these new comers to quickly get familiar with this industry and save much time. We know, time is really valuable especially in business.

It is true that a recent graduate is more enthusiastic and energetic, which may help the company to grow. Just like Paul said, but it is not enough just with these qualities. To start a good business, we need skills and enough knowledge. Bringing up experienced employees to the company, it would never be a problem.
